"Shift"
This painting shows a woman unsteadily changing between two rocking chairs. Rocking chairs symbolize the steadfast structure of life itself; they provide comfort for infants while being rocked in nurturing arms. As we grow elderly, we crave the calm tranquility the rocking chair provides. In between infancy and old age, we rise to the challenges that life brings us. We may not need the chair during this time, but we always know it can be called upon for respite when we need it.

One Desolate Glorious Day   Lawn Bathers by Kathryn Peterson

Desolate Glorious Day
We see a grim dirt yard on a cold day. The snow is melting as the child plays with rocks. This haven is inside the child's imagination. While the surroundings are a little rough, this child is happy with her game.

Into a Loop
Success in a sport starts in the mind. Physical activity is a haven. In this scene the woman glides along an empty space of ice. She knows this challenging sport well; she is in control and her mind is completely focused on her actions--not anything outside the moment. If it were otherwise, she could not skate with excellence. Outside troubles or pressures must be left outside

Rothko’s Lonely Inspiration
The serenity of a quiet bath is also a refuge from the cold winter outside. The thawing red foot symbolizes the transition from the outside world to the haven of the bath. In this respite, an artist can invent. Who knows, maybe the bathtub really was the location of Rothko’s inspiration.

Thanks For the Memories
The brain and it's memories. Knowledge. There can't be a better place to find a haven than when recalling our experiences. To revisit happy times and appreciate concepts we have learned

Have a Pepsi
Gathering is a powerful haven. Sharing activities and special moments with family brings us together. Cooking with someone you love creates fond memories. Eating together is both a necessity to life and is often central to creating and strengthening our social ties.
